LP Volunteers In The Community

At LP, building our communities means more than just cash contributions. It means real involvement as leaders and volunteers. LP employees are encouraged to volunteer based on the needs of their communities and the wide variety of skills and talents they have to offer. Because we believe our local sites know their own communities best, most volunteer efforts are organized at the local level.

Though we don’t keep formal records of employee volunteer hours (we prefer to use resources that would go into database management for direct benefit of the community), we estimate that employees donate between 10 and 30 hours per year volunteering during work hours. As individuals and as teams, LP volunteers donate many thousands of hours to our communities every year.

A few examples of the hundreds of LP-sponsored volunteer efforts:

  • Well over half of all headquarters employees volunteered to build three LP Habitat for Humanity houses in 2006, 2007, and 2008 An additional house was built in partnership with the Tennessee Titans in 2007 and 2008.
  • LP’s Nashville Lean Six Sigma team lent expertise to the LP Pencil Box, a free school supply store of Nashville’s Pencil Foundation, to better track inventory and organize donations.
  • Many LP mills and offices fielded teams for Race for the Cure and Relay for Life. Money they raised through pledges was matched by the LP Foundation.
  • Employee teams and families in the Portland office cleaned up beaches in Oregon through Oregon SOLV, and helped plant more than 160 trees for a local park.
  • Wilmington, NC employees and their families cleaned North Carolina waterways as part of the ‘Big Sweep” program.
  • Employees from the small administrative office at Hayden Lake gathered more than two tons of food for the Community Action Partnership food bank, reaching their goal of collecting a ton of food for the needy.
  • Employees from the Roaring River, North Carolina, mill donated teaching time to present a forestry workshop for ninth-grade students on forest ecology, silviculture, dendrology, soils and fires.
  • Hanceville, Alabama, employees participated in the annual Cullman County Water Festival, helping more than 1,100 fourth-graders understand all aspects of the water supply.
  • LP employees are members of volunteer fire departments, search and rescue teams, and community development boards in the communities where we operate.
 

NonProfit Board Participation

LP executives and managers donate time and expertise as members of boards of directors for community nonprofits. From 2006 through 2010 LP managers at corporate headquarters served as directors for such organizations as Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity, the Land Trust for Tennessee, the YWCA of Middle Tennessee, the PENCIL Foundation, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Y-Build, the Nashville Chamber of Commerce, Middle Tennessee Diversity Forum, the Red Cross and ReBuilding Together, among others.
